I always have been fond of black Labradors
When you search the Internet for poetry about dogs and Labrador retrievers in particular the majority of the poems you will find are all prayers for a dog who has died or condolences for the loss of a pet.
Perhaps this has to do with the fact that when a pet dog dies we mourn its final departure and are more open to writing a poem on grieve or perhaps in our minds poems are somehow linked to sadness and loss.

After searching and sorting my way through countless poems about dogs and pet sympathy cards I finally found the following poem about a black Labrador that is not about death and loss but instead celebrates the joy of having a wonderful dog like a Labrador in your life (regardless the colour).
I would have liked it very much to mention the author of this poem and include a word of thanks, unfortunately I could not find any information about the author but perhaps we can fill that void at a later stage.

MY HEART BELONGS TO A BIG BLACK LAB
Magnificent and loving,
With such a gentle soul-
My big Black Lab
Has a heart of pure gold.
Strong and every patient,
With a passion for fun-
From the beginning,
My heart was won.
A loyal friend,
That can’t be beat-
This big Black Lab
Makes my life complete.
